Gil was in front of me, completely changed into his wolfman form. His back was turned to me but I had to stop him from going into the woods. But when I reached my hand out to him, he turned and attacked me with his claws, and the blood spilled from my body.

I gasped, my eyes flying open from the dream. Sitting up, I panted as I looked at the open window, then I glanced over, my heart pounding. Thankfully, Gil was still beside me.

He stirred awake and leaned up on his elbow. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I just . . .” I ran my hand through my sweaty hair. “I had a bad dream.”

“Mm.” Gil sat up and propped his chin up on my shoulder. His nails ran lightly down my back, soothing me. “What about?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Come here.” Gil pulled me down next to him and held me close.

I smiled and pressed my face against him, feeling his chest hair tickle my cheek. It took me a while to go back to sleep, the remnants of the dream still there in my mind. Gil seemed to have no problem falling back into it, and I was thankful. I didn’t want him to go back out and shift into his wolf form.

Despite my tiredness, I was glad when daylight broke, and I got up to make breakfast while Gil stayed in bed. After keeping so busy yesterday, he was tired, and I shook my head at the idea that he could go hunting for a day or two in the woods and come back fine, but simply cleaning a house and fishing had worn him out.

No, he does come back exhausted after hunts. I’ve seen him drained before. Perhaps he’s just a baby.

I shook my head.

No, he’s grown up in wealth with servants. He didn’t abandon that life until over eight years ago. Since then he’s been a hermit, a loner. But all he knows how to do is provide food and safety. This keeping up a house and land is different.

The thought of us staying together for years, possibly the rest of our lives, swirled around in my head. Most people my age had already gotten married and started families, but given my desire for men, all of that was more difficult.

While the past few decades had seen a rise in acceptance among men and women who favored one another, marriage was still a muddled concept among us. People like us simply didn’t marry, or if we did, it wasn’t common practice, but it was becoming more of one.

Still.

As I stirred the eggs over the stove, I looked over to see dried custard on the counter. I bit my lip at the memory. It would be forever branded in my mind, especially when I sat down to eat.

When the eggs were done, the door of my room cracked open and Gil stepped out.

“Why didn’t you wake me?” he asked, his eyes still groggy.

“Because you were sleeping good.
